Ousmane Dembele caused quite the stir at FC Barcelona in January. His refusal to leave Nou Camp in favour of a free transfer in the summer, coupled with his hefty wage demands, had left the fans infuriated.
So much so the Frenchman was booed by the Barcelona supporters shortly after the Janaury period was over.
However, Xavi has been quick to defend the talented forward and hasn’t shied away from giving him game-time despite his contract expiring at the end of the season.
His faith appears to have paid off as well, with the attacker bagging one goal and seven assists in the last six La Liga matches.
Given his stupendous wage demands, though, it was always believed Barcelona would have to let him leave Camp Nou on a free transfer amid interest from PSG. But his blazing performances have now forced the club to reconsider its stance.
According to Foot Mercato, Barcelona are considering offering a new proposal to Dembele. The club’s president Joan Laporta is determined to keep hold of the star player and plans to put forth a new offer, with a salary predictably higher than what was initially offered.
Dembele’s entourage are not expected to negotiate or lower their initial demand of €20 million in net salary. But with the forward sharing a close relationship with Xavi, coupled with the addition of his old pal Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January, it will be interesting to see if the player opts to remain at Nou Camp beyond the summer.
The Frenchman has never truly voiced his desire to leave Barça and could be open to prolonging his stay in Catalonia – a notion fueled further by reports of the player shouting /”I’m staying” after the win over Real Madrid this past weekend.
