Following their elimination from the UEFA Champions League earlier this month, it became very clear that Barcelona have a long and hard road ahead of them to get back to where they belong.
And the onus of getting them back to their gloried heights has fallen on the shoulders of club legend Xavi Hernandez. The 41-year-old took over the managerial reins at Camp Nou last month and made a strong start to life in the dugout.
However, a run of two defeats and a draw in a row in all competitions will have given him a good idea of the challenge that lies in front of him. But, the 2010 FIFA World Cup winner has the backing of another Barca legend, Luis Enrique.
The ex-Barcelona player and manager has given his vote of confidence to Xavi, claiming that the Spanish tactician has what it takes to lead the club to greatness.
Speaking in an interview with Movistar (h/t Gerard Romero), Enrique said: “Barça has improved under Xavi. Give him confidence. We all know that Xavi will take Barça on a great path. It will take some time, true… but less time than most people expect.”
The Spanish national team manager then added that it will take time for the Barcelona boss to get the confidence back within the players, but expressed his belief that things will take a turn for the better soon.
“Xavi has taken over a squad with players that have no confidence due to the previous situation. The key is to get that back. But it’s not a pill you swallow and boom! You have to be patient and work with what you have. Things will get better,” Enrique said.
Following the 2-2 draw at Osasuna, Barcelona are left 18 points shy of league leaders Real Madrid. Although, they are just five below Atletico Madrid in fourth and must look to cut that gap down soon. The Catalans will face Elce and Sevilla in La Liga before the winter break.
