Djokovic Survives Five-Set Fritz Scare In Melbourne

Novak Djokovic overcame Taylor Fritz and abdominal pain on Friday to make it through to the Australian Open Round of 16 for the 14th time.

World No. 1 Djokovic was tested in the opening two sets, but suffered an injury in the third set and had to successfully manage both pain and a red-hot opponent to advance 7-6(1), 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-2. After dropping the third and fourth sets without reaching deuce on the Fritz serve, Djokovic gained back-to-back breaks in the decider to earn his 78th victory at Melbourne Park (78-8) after three hours and 25 minutes.

“This is definitely one of the most special wins in my life,” said Djokovic, in an on-court interview. “It does not matter what round it is, against who it is. Under these kinds of circumstances, to pull this through is definitely something I will remember forever.”

Rookie Chandler Smith leads Truck Daytona practice in Toyota domination

For the first time since 21 February 2020 in Las Vegas, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series held a practice. On Thursday, before the Cup Series‘ Bluegreen Vacations Duel, the Trucks ran their only practice session a day before the season opener at Daytona International Speedway. 18-year-old rookie Chandler Smith and his fellow Toyota Tundras nearly swept the top ten as they comprised all but one of the spots.

Smith, who signed with Kyle Busch Motorsports for the full season, led Austin Hill with a lap time of 47.458 and speed of 189.641 mph, the former being just .007 faster. The ThorSport Racing quartet, who had switched to Toyota before the season after three years with Ford, all had spots in the top ten with Johnny Sauter leading in third. Rafael Nadal extended his bid for a record 21st Grand Slam title on Thursday, when he defeated Michael Mmoh 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 at the Australian Open.

The second seed struck 40 winners and won 15 of 16 net points under the roof on Rod Laver Arena to claim victory in one hour and 47 minutes. Nadal is through to the Australian Open third round for the 15th time in 16 tournament appearances.

“I always try to be better [than the previous match]. Sometimes [I am] better, sometimes not,” said Nadal, in an on-court interview. “I think tonight has been a positive evening for me, winning in straight sets. [It is] great news, for everything.”

Stardew Valley Update 1.5 Is Out Now for Consoles

The largest update yet for Stardew Valley, version 1.5, is out now for Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles. Developer ConcernedApe announced on Twitter that the update should be available on all platforms within the next few hours.

This past December, version 1.5 released on PC, and now console players will be able to download and enjoy this big update to the game. The update adds significant content, including “late game” additions.

Just to name a few, it adds a beach farm, which is great for fishing and foraging; advanced options for community bundles, such as randomizing the items needed; split-screen co-op; and tons of new extras such as characters, events, quests, music, and plenty of secrets.

Martin Truex Jr. signs contract extension with Joe Gibbs Racing

Martin Truex Jr. will stay in the #19 Toyota of Joe Gibbs Racing for a while longer. On Wednesday, before the first Daytona 500 practice, the team announced the NASCAR Cup Series driver has signed a contract extension. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it will keep him with the team through at least 2022.

“I’m happy to get this news out there so we can focus on this season and the future with Joe Gibbs Racing,” Truex stated. “This is where I wanted to be and to continue building on the success we have had together the past two years. I appreciate Coach (Gibbs), my team, everyone at JGR and all of our partners like Bass Pro Shops, Auto-Owners Insurance, Reser’s Fine Foods, Stanley Black & Decker and Toyota for making this possible and I look forward to continuing those relationships as we move forward.”

Day 4 Preview: Can Medvedev, Rublev Stay On Course?

Daniil Medvedev had just put the finishing touches on Russia’s dominant run to the 2021 ATP Cup title, having defeated Italy’s Matteo Berrettini, 6-4, 6-2. With his teammates roaring courtside, the 24-year-old Muscovite took a bow and swept his hand across his body in a near-Boroquian gesture.

Then came the Volga-wide grin.

As he so often does to his opponents, Medvedev had left us guessing. Where in the world did that come from? It turns out he borrowed it from former Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez, the onetime Bundesliga scoring machine who occasionally applied some flair to his post-goal celebrations.
