Maguire insinuates Klopp partly responsible for United’s changed relationship with referees

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has insinuated that Jurgen Klopp, among “other people from other teams”, has helped to turn officials against his club, as reported by the Echo.

The Red Devils succumbed to a 1-1 draw with West Brom today to hand Manchester City a seven point gap at the top of the table, with the Citizens possessing a game-in-hand to extend the distance.

“Ever since other people from other teams spoke about us we’ve had absolutely nothing from the referee or VAR,” the England international said. “At the moment we’re playing without them so we’ve got to make sure we’re not leaving the game in the hands of the referee or the VAR.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side had a penalty given in the second-half, after Maguire was brought to ground by Semi Ajayi, though a VAR review overturned Craig Pawson’s decision.

“You never know” – Arsenal/Real Madrid midfielder Martin Odegaard discusses his future

While speaking to Norwegian channel TV 2, Martin Odegaard was quizzed on whether he will return to Real Madrid when his Arsenal loan expires.

Odegaard signed for Arsenal on loan for the remainder of the season in January. He had a successful stint with Real Sociedad last campaign, which convinced Zinedine Zidane to keep him around in Madrid. However, such is the competition for places in that area of the field with Los Blancos, he found his game time limited.

A loan was absolutely necessary for Odegaard, with the midfielder finally showing signs of fulfilling the potential he showed as a youngster, which led to Real Madrid signing him in the first place. Arsenal showed interest in the 22-year-old and signed him for an initial six-months, an unusually short-term move for a ‘Big Six’ … Read the rest

Man United great sends depressing message to rotated star

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has had his say on Donny van de Beek’s unsettling situation at the club, admitting he feels sorry for the player.

The young Dutchman arrived at Old Trafford during the last summer transfer window but has failed to settle into the starting XI despite his purchase price.

Van de Beek wasn’t an expensive buy but many felt with his potential and the roughly £35m the club spent on him, it meant he’d be a regular starter.

Instead the versatile midfielder has had to settle for a role on the bench and it’s safe to say he hasn’t had the impact he may have liked just yet.

As a pundit, Neville has certainly seen Van de Beek whenever he’s on the pitch so he’s speaking based on experience.

James Milner picks up knock midgame; Liverpool have 10 out injured

James Milner has added to Liverpool’s burgeoning injury list, with the Reds having picked up four injuries in the last week to the 35-year-old, Ben Davies, Divock Origi, and Fabinho.

With the Englishman switched for Thiago Alcantara early in the first-half, the club now has 10 of its players out of action for the foreseeable future.

Jurgen Klopp will no doubt be wanting to pull his hair out, with the latest injury to his trusted Vice-Captain meaning that his side have almost accumulated a team’s worth of sidelined stars.

As Rio Ferdinand was keen to highlight prior to the game, few other clubs would be able to manage the fallout of our crisis as effectively as Liverpool have, but the mounting injury list is making that task increasingly unmanageable.

Video: Jose Mourinho quizzed on Tottenham duo, questions if they’re “physical and mentally ready”

Jose Mourinho has been speaking on the topic of Dele Alli and Gareth Bale after Tottenham’s defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad.

Mourinho’s men fell short against City, who in fairness have been the in-form team in the Premier League since the turn of the year, and were subsequently defeated 3-0.

The Spurs boss spoke post-match about his players’ tiredness, but that is while neglecting to acknowledge that there are talented players within his ranks that he doesn’t tend to use.

To name a couple – Dele Alli and Gareth Bale.

Both players have found opportunities in the Premier League hard to gone by this term, and speaking after the game, Mourinho offered some insight into why that may be.

No Partey, no party?

Morning. It’s Friday.

Mikel Arteta meets the press later this morning, and with a hectic and very difficult few weeks ahead of us, he’ll be disappointed that his big signing from the ‘summer’ transfer window, Thomas Partey, will be missing for the Leeds game this weekend at least.

In the latest fitness update, the club confirmed a hamstring strain for the Ghana international, and obviously that’s a blow. He’s our best midfield player, and being without him makes our life more complicated. I don’t need to prove this with stats, by the way. You don’t need them to assess Partey. You just need eyes. Eyes that can see what he does, how he does it, and how he makes those around him better.

I think Granit Xhaka deserves credit for his recent form but being part of a functional midfield pairing has played a significant part in that. The two … Read the rest

'Not in the mood': Bruno explains why he doesn't feel like celebrating goals

Bruno Fernandes has said he has missed the buzz of scoring a goal in front of fans at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese magnifico only managed four home games after his move from Sporting Lisbon last January before lockdown came and football was condemned to be played behind closed doors.

And in an interview published in Portuguese outlet A Bola, Fernandes admitted that it was sometimes difficult to celebrate when there was no crowd there to join in.

‘When we score we want to celebrate,’ he said.

‘Some players, when they score, don’t feel like celebrating because there is nobody in the stands, but we have to create a happy environment when we score as if they were there.

‘One of the things that the fans told me when we started playing behind closed doors is that when we scored, we should celebrate as if they were too.

Reds dealt transfer blow with LFC-linked Upamecano poised for Bayern switch

Dayot Upamecano has reportedly decided on his next destination once the season ends, with RMC journalist Loic Tanzi claiming that the Frenchman is set on a switch to Bayern Munich.

The Bundesliga and Champions League-holders were considered favourites to secure the 22-year-old’s signature at the end of the season.

Hansi Flick’s side’s success in their pursuit of the French international puts Liverpool and Chelsea’s interest to bed, barring a sudden u-turn on the matter.

Prompted by further injuries in the heart of the defence, the Reds have already acted in the winter window to strengthen their backline with the additions of Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak.

Potential boost for Chelsea as transfer target touted to miss Champions League clash through injury

Sometimes it can be good to see a transfer target up close so the fans can see what they are all about, but if they are a key part of the other team then it might be a good thing if they can’t play.

Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez has been a key part of Diego Simeone’s fearsome defence for a couple of seasons now, while a recent report from Football 365 indicated that Chelsea saw him as a potential successor for Thiago Silva.

They quoted Fabrizio Romano as saying that Chelsea were showing an interest in him, so there was a good chance to see him in action after they were drawn against Atleti in the Champions League.

Nicolas Pepe 16 4
Willian 17 0
Eddie Nketiah 14 1

Overall 106 23

As the table above shows, Arsenal do not score enough goals. It is their biggest issue this season, per Scott Willis they have scored five fewer goals than they had after the same number of games this time last season, despite creating only 0.6 fewer XG. Converting periods of dominance into goals is, to my mind, the top priority on Mikel Arteta’s grievance tab.
