Full Carabao Cup Quarter Final Draw: Arsenal get Man City as their reward for Anfield triumph

The draw for the Carabao Cup Quarter Finals has been made, and there’ll be a meeting for old friends at the Emirates Stadium.

After dispatching Liverpool at Anfield, Arsenal’s reward is a home tie against Manchester City, pitching Mikel Arteta against his former club and boss, Pep Guardiola.

The Gunners, have already beaten the Citizens with Arteta at the helm, and with home advantage this time, the north Londoners might fancy their chances once again.

The other standout tie from the last eight sees Manchester United head to Goodison Park and a tough assignment against a rejuvenated Everton side.

In the remaining two ties, Brentford’s reward for their demolition of near neighbours Fulham is a home tie against Premier League opposition in Steve Bruce’s Newcastle.

Celta 0-3 Barcelona: Match Summary

Barcelona played their second game of the La Liga campaign at the usually tricky Balaídos in the Galician region. In Galicia, Barça played beautiful football but had some problems at times. For Ronald Koeman’s second game in charge of the Culés, it was an excellent display and, after the Champions League draw earlier, the fans must have a lot of expectations for the remainder of the term.

First Half

Barcelona started exquisitely, absolutely annihilating Celta’s men with their constant passing of the ball and the usually lively Galician side found themselves in a lot of precarious situations. Before the half-time whistle, Barcelona had more than 60{3851c0879557ceb6c70cddb6630c7df9a9750acfd53fffec21979e603af26faa} of the ball, and Celta, who started with ten men behind the ball began to play more.

However, Ansu Fati’s early goal settled the nerves early on for Barça as they usually find it hard to score at Balaídos. After a great build-up, Coutinho … Read the rest

“Has to start” – These Man United fans demand that Solskjaer rewards impressive performance with a start vs Spurs on Sunday

The defensive situation at Man United still doesn’t look ideal, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has painted himself into a corner with some of his recent comments.

It’s clear to see that Harry Maguire will start because he’s the captain and they wildly overpaid to get him, but Victor Lindelof is just not the answer next to him.

He’s too timid and doesn’t seem to excel at any particular thing, but Solskjaer recently confirmed that they wouldn’t be going into the transfer market because he has a lot of options in the squad.

There’s nothing wrong with making those comments, but it means he no longer has any excuse for sticking with an underperforming starting unit, and Eric Bailly made an excellent case for a starting spot tonight.

The pages are blotted with injuries, but Dembele’s Blaugrana story is far from over

Ousmane Dembele runs into the open space ahead of him on the right as Lionel Messi shimmies past a distraught Cesar Azpilicueta. Messi looks up, spots the Frenchman in ample room and nonchalantly passes it towards him. The youngster hurriedly takes the first touch and is left with just enough room to shoot. He then promptly takes it in his stride and fires it into the top left corner to make it 2-0, after which he immediately points towards the Argentinean great.

That was Ousmane Dembele’s first goal for Barcelona after a 4-month hiatus due to an unfortunate injury in his very first season with the Spanish giants. The Cules would’ve been hopeful of him finally coming into his own after that goal, potentially filling a large Neymar shaped hole. Fast forward a couple of seasons and the dynamic Frenchman has failed to make a real impact like people would … Read the rest

“Man management is pathetic” – These Chelsea fans lay into Frank Lampard after another disappointing result

It’s going to be fascinating to see how things go for Frank Lampard at Chelsea this season, because any manager trying to fit several new signings into a team needs time for everything to gel.

The problem is that he still needs some positive results to buy him that time, and Chelsea are infamously impatient when it comes to letting managers work things out.

He impressed a lot of people last year but there was no pressure due to the transfer ban, but now some serious money has been spent on the squad and there’s nowhere to hide anymore.

Tactical Analysis of Barcelona’s season opener against Villareal

FC Barcelona kicked off their 2020-21 La Liga campaign at home against Villareal in style. They won by a margin of 4-0, marking a very auspicious and positive start to the Ronald Koeman era.

The shape of the team

The starting eleven was, somewhat expectedly, the same set of players that started against Elche in the Joan Gamper Trophy. Neto started in goal in the absence of Marc Andre Ter Stegen. Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet, Jordi Alba and Sergi Roberto started in defence, Sergio Busquets and Frenkie de Jong started in a double pivot, Ansu Fati and Antoine Griezmann started as nominal wingers, Philippe Coutinho started as the nominal 10, and Lionel Messi as the nominal 9. Here is Barcelona’s pass map until the first substitution (minute 70):

As can be seen, Griezmann frequently dropped deep and moved in – and he can be forgiven for that, for he is … Read the rest

While the Man United board will want to be judged at the end of the transfer window, there’s no doubt that being passive in the transfer market has stunted their start to the season.

Ronald Koeman talks following his first La Liga win with Barça

Ronald Koeman played his first official game with Barcelona tonight. The Dutch manager managed to get a comfortable win against a strong Villareal side. After the game, Koeman talked in the post-match conference and started his words putting praise on Ansu Fati:

“I’m delighted with Ansu Fati. He has a huge future ahead of him. Fati’s performance should be highlighted. I was complaining a little last week when he didn’t show his maximum performance in pre-season. He’s only 17 years old, he will have a great future but he also must improve things. Sometimes he lacks a bit of concentration.”, said the Barça boss.

Regarding a potential striker signing, the manager added: “It would be good have a ‘9’ so we have more options, but we can also play without one.”

Griezmann, who had a more silent performance tonight did not disappoint the Dutchman either: “I’m very happy with Griezmann. … Read the rest
