Joan Laporta’s favourite, Julian Nagelsmann, responds to Barcelona rumours
With June approaching, and a shift of administration at Barcelona, all kinds of rumours have been floating around surrounding the club. Talk of transfers, arrivals, departures, contract extensions, change of directors, CEO, coaching staff — search and you shall find. Well, one of these include the continuity of Ronald Koeman.
Josep Bartomeu offered Koeman a two-year contract in the summer of 2020, which is still in place despite the shift in the presidency. However, Barcelona have endured a far from ideal season under the Dutchman, who faces doubts over his future at the club. Xavi, Frank Lampard, and Mikel Arteta, all have been linked to Barça, but it seems that Joan Laporta has his eyes on the sensational Julian Nagelsmann. The German has been linked to several clubs, and has finally spoken out responding to rumours linking him to Barcelona.
“I have a contract until 2023. It would be a bit much to say that it annoys me – I know how professional football works.
Apparently, I would’ve joined Tottenham, Real Madrid or Barcelona by now.
There are great coaches at all of these clubs and they have a contract, just as I do. It is not annoying me, nor is it flattering me. It doesn’t have any relevance for me. I’m only concentrating on [the game against] Eintracht Frankfurt, where we have to do a lot already.
No matter what coaches you are talking about, whether it is Bayern or Barcelona, it would be disrespectful to talk about these clubs. It would be disrespectful, as all of those coaches are very successful and have a contract as well.
From my perspective, it is a topic in the media. I understand that it is interesting, primarily for the fans, so I’m not upset. Neither am I saying that the question is disrespectful. All I’m saying is, that it would be disrespectful for me to talk about these topics.”

The RB Leipzig manager handled the questions regarding his future with the utmost sincerity, and professionalism. And with his answers, not only did he show respect to his own employers, but to Koeman, who has an existing contract with Barça.
Despite a slow start, Barcelona have recently taken flight in the Copa del Rey, producing a sensational comeback against Sevilla, and bringing themselves to life in the La Liga. While the display against Paris Saint-Germain was superb, the team could not print a La Remontada 2.0 for themselves. Koeman must be praise for these impressive performances, but it seems that Laporta has his heart set on Nagelsmann. Without name-checking him, pre-elections, Laporta even said that there were “young German” coaches who could manage Barcelona.
Nagelsmann rose to prominence when he managed to take an underwhelming Hoffenheim squad to a spot in Europe during one of his first seasons as a first-team coach. Soon after that, RB Leipzig came calling, and he has not looked back since.
