Quique Setien talks about his time at Barça: “It was a dream, but a lot of things surprised me”

While there are little to no happy memories for Barcelona in recent years, it is probably the sting of Quique Setien in the second half of the 2019/20 that troubles them the most. The Spaniard took over while the club was top of the La Liga table, but eventually lost out to Real Madrid. Moreover, they endured a 8-2 hammering at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

His exit was followed by controversy, including the resignation of Josep Bartomeu and some unpaid dues. After nearly a year since his sacking, Setien lifts the lid on his time at Barcelona, speaking to Cadena Ser, as relayed by Marca.

“When I get to a place I always think that I am going to stay there my whole life, but I am perfectly aware that you live from the results and if you do not win you will last three games,” Setien said.

However, on his departure from Barça, Setien had a few opinions, saying, “I have already paid the price. I don’t regret signing for Barcelona, it was a dream. But when I was there I found out a lot of things that surprised me – very, very complicated situations that I could not solve or where I had to look for other solutions.”

The Catalan giants were in a complicated place at the time, with the administration of Bartomeu under more scrutiny than ever, raising several political situations.

He continued, “But now, there is not turning back. It coincided with a difficult stage for the club, followed by a series of complicated events. I shared my percentage of blame as the coach, but not all of it.”
