According to Tutto Mercato Web, Barcelona will look to exploit their extraordinary relations with Ajax in order to approach an alternative for David Alaba. During the International break, multiple reports stated that Alaba is distant from Barcelona than ever. The vital reason behind it is the overflowing wage bill.
The Austrian will be free this summer, however, he insists on a multi-million euro contract. Along with that, his agent Pini Zanhavi also wants a signing bonus to bring the player to Camp Nou. The difficulties in the operation mean that the board of Joan Laporta needs to be ready with feasible backups.
One of the defenders that Barça rate highly is the Argentine Lisandro Martinez. Currently, his market valuation is set around €20-25m. It’s a no-brainer that it would be difficult to complete this transaction in one go. The Board will surely look to use Barça’s historic ties with Ajax to settle on a deal as they did with Sergino Dest.
The 23-year-old joined Ajax in 2019 and is one of the first names on the starting eleven for Erik Ten Hag. One of Martinez’s characteristics is his versatility. He can play in positions varying from left-back to a defensive midfielder. He also has one appearance for the Argentine national team.
The Ajax defender has a good vision and excellent passing statistics, something admired a lot at the Catalan club. His tackling accuracy is also tremendous compared to top European defenders. It can be said beyond a doubt that he could prove to be a good young addition to the team if the Alaba deal can not be materialized.
The Blaugranes will however face stiff competition from Lazio and Roma to acquire the Argentine’s services. The current Laporta board is fond of young talented players, and the pursuit of another young defender will not surprise those who have followed him closely.
