According to reports from Tala Radio, Atletico Madrid do not see the arrival of Antoine Greizmann as impossible.
The media outlet further reports that Diego Simeone’s side understand Barcelona’s delicate financial situation. They consider that the Frenchman will leave the Catalan capital in this window and is willing to cut his salary in half to return to the Wanda Metropolitano.
Earlier in the transfer window, a move for Antoine Griezmann to Atletico Madrid seemed highly likely. Talks seemed to be progressing well between Barcelona and Los Colchoneros.
A deal seemed to be in place to swap the World Cup winner and Saul Niguez. The Spanish midfielder would add versatility to Ronald Koeman’s side in a move that would primarily salvage the wage bill issue.
However, talks broke down at an advanced stage of negotiations because the Madrid-based side were not willing to pay the Frenchman’s complete wages.
Though the reports say that the defending champions are optimistic about Griezmann’s signing, the move does not seem likely to happen.
In his recent press conference, Ronald Koeman made his admiration of the striker clear and said that he has high expectations from him.
Also, with the departure of Lionel Messi, the World Cup winners role in the squad will be massive. He will have to lead the front line and take on responsibility in scoring goals.
All that said, it would be implausible for Griezmann to move back to his former club. However, contrasting reports indicate that there is movement behind the scenes, and one cannot rule out any surprises.
