Barcelona are on the verge of completing the signing of Ferran Torres from Manchester City.
The 21-year-old had become a top target for the club ever since Xavi Hernandez became the manager last month. Talks over a deal for the Spanish forward had been going on ever since but the price-point was proving to be a stumbling block, leading to negotiations getting dragged.
However, Barça were able to make a breakthrough earlier this week, and have now agreed a deal worth €55 million with the Citizens for the signing of Torres.
The Spaniard is a versatile operator who made his name as a right-sided winger at boyhood club, Valencia. However, since moving to the Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2020, the youngster has been asked to play as a false nine by Pep Guardiola on several occasions.
And, Torres has excelled in the position for the Premier League champions. Now, SPORT is reporting that, like Guardiola, Xavi, too, is keen on utilising Torres through the middle and not out on the flanks.
It is claimed that the Barcelona manager will deploy the soon-to-be new arrival as a false nine, flanked by Ansu Fati, who is close to returning from an injury, on the left and the fit-again Ousmane Dembele on the right.
This is believed to be Xavi’s preferred frontline while he will also have Memphis Depay and Martin Braithwaite back from injury in the near future as well. Due to this, the report states that the Blaugrana might not think about signing a No. 9 before the January transfer window closes.
Since signing for Manchester City in 2020, Torres has featured 43 times, scoring 16 goals and creating four more. Of these 43 matches, the 21-year-old played as a centre-forward 18 times, finding the back of the net on nine occasions – meaning a goal every other game.
Torres has been sidelined with a foot fracture since October but has been back in training recently. He is expected to make a full recovery by the time the La Liga season resumes next year after the winter break.
