Marc Overmars, the Ajax sports director, opened up about some information regarding his future during an interview with Ajax Life, relayed by Mundo Deportivo.
During the interview, the Dutchman was asked to shed some light on his future plans, and he responded by briefly giving Barcelona the green light. Amongst his previous teams in Barcelona and Arsenal, the legendary player said that he would opt for the Spanish side over the English side for any future plans.
“At a certain point the thing is simple: either I continue and I stay here in Ajax or we go abroad again as a family. I have let that train pass six times.”
He continued, “They are both [Barcelona and Arsenal] interesting. I think my family would choose Spain. We live there very comfortably. And I think they would also choose Barcelona.”
The report becomes more significant when the fact that he was close to leaving Ajax last season is taken into account. Despite being a prominent member of the Amsterdam based club’s board, Overmars’ departure to take a sabbatical was speculated widely. However, he chose to stay at the end and continued as the sporting director.
Under his tenure as Sporting Director, Ajax signed and developed some of world football’s biggest names. Frenkie de Jong, Dusan Tadic, Andre Onana, Hakim Ziyech and Nicolas Tagliafico are amongst the names the Barcelona legend brought into the Dutch side.
Moreover, it is to be remembered that it was his promising reign as the director that helped the Ajax side reach the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League two seasons ago.
