Barcelona have a chance to go within one point of first place after Atletico Madrid lose to Sevilla

Atletico Madrid, who had enjoyed a resounding start to the season, have once again dropped points against a formidable Sevilla, losing 1-0 in the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium on Sunday night.

What seemed to be a guaranteed La Liga championship season for the Madrid-based club has now turned into a desperate attempt to maintain their lead, which has slimmed down to a minimal 1 point lead if Barcelona manage to win their fixture tomorrow night against Real Valladolid.

Los Colchoneros put in a deplorable performance against Sevilla, being dominated in possession entirely. It seemed that Atléti were hanging onto dear life for most of the match, with wave after wave of Sevilla attack helping flounder Atléti’s defence.

Eventually, it was a brilliant move worked by former Barça man Rakitic, Jesus Navas, and Marcos Acuna that led to, what may potentially end up being, a La Liga season-defining goal for Los Nervionenses. Navas, after receiving a wonderful through-ball from Suso, crossed the ball in deep into Los Rojiblancos’ penalty area, with the left-back Acuna getting on the end of an incredibly smart header.

With Atléti having lost to Sevilla, their lead can potentially be trimmed down to just one point. Barça face a seemingly simple fixture against 16th place Valladolid; however, there is no space for complacency. The Garnet and the Blue must give it their all and captivate on this opportunity presented to them.

A title win seemed nearly impossible a few months back; now, many fans are touting Barça to be league favourites after Los Rojiblancos’ recent, but consistent, slip-ups.

The Blaugrana must maintain their focus in the remaining ten fixtures of the season and attempt to win each and every single one of them. If the Catalan club can keep their focus, one thing is for sure: the title race is back on and is intense as ever.
