Barcelona have made Ronald Araujo’s contract extension their number one priority, with a report from SPORT claiming that the team has updated their side of terms and are now waiting for the central defender to respond.
Araujo’s current Barcelona contract runs until 2023 and after making an initial approach, the club decided to stall the negotiations as they moved their focus on acquiring new players in the January transfer window.
While there was no rush, the Uruguay national was evidently unhappy with the offer Barcelona had tabled.
The defender and his representatives were especially astonished after seeing the investment the Catalan management had done in January and were quick to express their disappointment towards the first offer.
It’s imperative to note that Barcelona are well aware of Araujo’s demand in the market, with as many as three Premier League teams chasing his signature.
Despite that, the 22-year-old remains one of the lowest-earning members of the team and even Barça’s new proposal did not exceed €3 million a year in salary. Araujo knows this figure will still keep him on the lower side compared to the players who have recently extended their deals and even those who are not the first-team regulars.
As relayed by SPORT, the young defender, whom Barcelona considers to be one of the leaders, is demanding the exact figures as those who have recently put pen to paper if not higher. The two parties are expected to meet again with Barcelona said to have been approaching this meeting with better terms.
Their idea is to get a solution as quickly as possible, particularly before Easter, so that they can tie him up for four more years. As for Araujo, there is no doubt that he wants to stay, but the team management will indeed have to solidify their part of negotiations to bear fruit.
