Barcelona with a shot to grab La Liga as Atletico drop points against Levante

Life has been far from easy this season for Barcelona in terms of results. As the Blaugranas continue to steam roll over minnows, big teams have always proved to be too big a mountain for the team to conquer. Be it Juventus, PSG, Sevilla, Real Madrid, or runaway Liga leaders Atletico Madrid, the Catalan outfit has continually fallen short of their mark.

However, it seems that even a disappointing season could prove to be enough for them as Atletico steer clear of the good-form highway, falling 0-2 to defeat against Levante. This loss comes at the back of their 1-1 draw against the same outfit, who were denied a double over Atleti courtesy of a heavily deflected shot from Marcos Llorente.

After cementing their place on top of the league since day one, it seems like the Diego Simeone race-car is in dire need of a pit-stop. One it will not get this season, of them all. In fact, after dropping points two times in the span of three days, the capital outfit are set to lock horns with Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League. And once they return, Villarreal will be ready to host them in the hopes of bouncing back to form.

The signs have not been looking positive for Simeone’s men for a while, actually. After dropping a total of just seven points in their first 19 games in the league, they have lost as many in the next four games. This includes the draw they endured courtesy of Facundo Ferreyra, who scored a last-minute equalised for Celta Vigo. And the schedule ahead does not look kind at all.

The likes of Luis Suarez and Marcos Llorente were playing their skin out in the past 11 games, scraping wins, but the run of 11 came to a halt against Levante at none other than the Wanda Metropolitano.

Still nine points clear with a game in hand, Barcelona are definitely within an outside shot to win the league. However, they must put all their focus on the league alone, ignoring the Copa del Rey and Champions League, both of which look next to impossible right now after the respective first legs. Now is the right time for Ronald Koeman to make the best use of his resources in the form of the incredible squad depth. Up next? Cadiz at Camp Nou.
