G2G Racing embroiled in Sonoma fiasco with Travis McCullough

What was supposed to be an dream turned into a nightmare for Travis McCullough when his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series début at Sonoma Raceway was aborted once he was already at the track due to a litany of issues surrounding him and his employer G2G Racing. As fans and media seek to find the full context, matters surrounding the team seemed to grow more questionable.

McCullough, primarily a short track racer, joined G2G for the Sonoma race in what would have been his maiden NASCAR start; he was assigned to the #47 while fellow Truck Series newcomer Mason Filippi was in the team’s #46. In an interview with Matt Burroughs of TehBen, McCullough explained G2G provided an especially appealing chance to race due to its more-than-affordable “crash clause”, which is charged to cover for damages in the event of a wreck. From there, however, things began to fall … Read the rest

The coolest and most interesting sponsorship deals in F1 history

Formula 1 has had a long relationship with sponsorship deals. The sport wouldn’t have grown into the huge behemoth that it is today without its teams being able to sell space on their cars for brands to add their logos.

The practice began with Lotus in the 1960s but soon spread right across the paddock. Before then, cars were painted in their national colours. For example, the Ferrari vehicles were painted in their iconic scarlet red, while teams from the UK used British racing green. After the introduction of sponsors, the colour often reflected the branding of the team willing to pay the most.

Over the years, there have been many brands that have come and gone from Formula 1, including major car manufacturers like Toyota and tire suppliers like Bridgestone. Among them, there have been plenty of mundane deals that you’ll likely forget about very quickly. But every now … Read the rest

NASCAR clarifies testing rules for outsiders

With 2007 Formula One World Champion Kimi Räikkönen set for his maiden NASCAR Cup Series start at Watkins Glen International in August, speculation has run deep in the NASCAR community about other drivers with little to no stock car racing experience potentially doing one-off starts. While organisations like Räikkönen’s new employer Trackhouse Racing Team and Team Stange Racing are eager to provide such opportunities, NASCAR recognises that even the most decorated non-stock car racer should know what they are doing should they decide to dabble.

NASCAR has notoriously stringent testing rules, and the sanctioning body is not afraid to clamp down on teams it views as bending such laws regardless of background. Nevertheless, with practices only lasting fifteen to twenty minutes in a given race weekend, it would not be smart to have someone unfamiliar with stock cars only get that much before diving into an actual race.

Thad Moffitt joins Young’s for Knoxville Trucks

Thad Moffitt‘s #20 Young’s Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado RST will be dirty after Saturday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Knoxville Raceway, which is probably why Clean Harbors and Safety-Kleen are the perfect sponsors for the race.

“Young’s Motorsports has been a great customer of ours through our Safety-Kleen business for thirteen years, so we’re excited to be represented on the hood of their truck—especially for such an important race,” commented Clean Harbors marketing director Buddy Judy. “We’re even more excited to see how good that Clean Harbors #20 looks dirty and up at the front. This is a legendary track so it’s only fitting to have a member of the legendary Petty family behind the wheel.”

The grandson of the legendary Richard Petty, Moffitt is seeking to break into the Truck Series in 2022 after spending the last five years competing in the ARCA Menards Read the rest

Brett Moffitt, Todd Gilliland enter Knoxville Trucks

Saturday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Knoxville Raceway will see two one-off drivers in full-time trucks, interestingly for both paternal reasons. As Austin Wayne Self skips his second straight race to focus on his newborn daughter and cede the #22 AM Racing Chevrolet Silverado to Brett Moffitt, Todd Gilliland will drive the #17 David Gilliland Racing Ford F-150 owned by his father.

Self missed last week’s race at Sonoma Raceway to be with his wife Jennifer as she had their daughter Zepplyn Jane, who was born on 10 June. However, the team opted not to hire a substitute driver and skipped the westward trip entirely. While Self will once again be out for Knoxville, his team intends to return with Moffitt behind the wheel.

Moffitt, the 2018 Truck champion and current Xfinity Series regular, débuted the team’s part-time #37 at the 2021 Knoxville race but finished … Read the rest

Alpine’s Otmar Szafnauer: “We’re looking ahead to make further inroads on fourth place”

BWT Alpine F1 Team brought home a double points finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with Fernando Alonso finishing seventh after starting tenth and Esteban Ocon moving up into the points to finish tenth after starting thirteenth.

Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer said that having both cars earn points was attainable for the team considering the unique challenges that the high-speed street circuit present. With five drivers retiring, including both Scuderia Ferrari cars ahead, attrition played a role in Alpine’s success.

“The aim today was to have both cars finish the race inside the points and we’ve been able to achieve that. The characteristics of the Baku City Circuit brings a unique challenge to both the drivers and the cars and we felt if we could get both cars across the chequered flag we would be in the points.”

Szafnauer said that there was a potential for an even better … Read the rest

This would be Ferrari’s second retirement of the race as Carlos Sainz stopped with a hydraulic failure on Lap 9.

Leclerc’s DNF left Verstappen ahead of Sergio Perez (who took the fastest lap) in a one-two for Red Bull, with Mercedes driver Russell promoted into the final podium place, having started fifth.

Toby Price wins Finke Desert Race as Baja looms

The Tatts Finke Desert Race is the most challenging off-road race in Australia, but its reputation has not stopped Toby Price from turning the Alice Springs-to-Finke-and-back run into his personal playground. He dominated the first day of racing on Saturday to the point where a runner-up finish on Sunday was not enough for Aaron James to surpass him for the overall victory, enabling Price to claim his eighth Finke and second in the Cars category.

With Jason Duncan as his co-driver, Price’s quest for an eighth victory began on a strong note when he topped the Prologue qualifying session, his TSCO-prepared #487 Mitsubishi Trophy Truck turning a lap time of 4:42.9 to edge out Josh Howells by two-tenths of a second for the pole. His momentum continued on Day #1 in more convincing fashion as his run from Alice Springs to Finke ended with a time of 1:36:38.5, over … Read the rest
