Solskjaer reacts to Shoretire performance, reveals expectations for the season

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is certainly pleased with Shola Shoretire and spent plenty of time praising him following his European debut.

The academy product broke a nearly 40-year-old record to become the youngest player ever to feature in European competition when he was brought on vs Real Sociedad.

United’s own Norman Whiteside was the one who held the record and fans are hoping it’s a sign of the better things to come.

Shoretire is highly rated by those at Old Trafford and supporters even wanted to see him play the whole 90 minutes.

However, Solskjaer has opted to protect the young winger as much as possible and it’s a decision that should bring long-term benefits.

Haaland’s reported £68m release clause thrown into doubt amid Liverpool interest

Liverpool are said to be keen on signing Erling Haaland, but doubt has now been thrown over the Dortmund superstar’s reported release clause.

The Reds are credited with interest in the Norway international by the Daily Mirror, but could be put off by a revelation in today’s edition of BILD.

As covered by CaughtOffside, the reliable German outlet sates Haaland’s release clause is actually ‘in excess of €100m’ (£86.5m), contrary to other reports.

TalkSPORT, while not the most reputable source by any means, do have solid links in the industry and previously claimed the striker has a release clause of £68m which activates next year.

"Let's see": Solskjaer coy on Man United's links to sensational talent

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had a curious response when asked about the club’s interest in Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland.

The sensational striker is probably Europe’s most sought-after talent for the upcoming transfer window and it remains to be seen if he will be sold.

United came close to signing Haaland before he decided to move to Dortmund instead and it’s believed that interest has remained.

Given Anthony Martial‘s struggles this season, it’s clear a new number nine is needed at Old Trafford to boost their chances of success.

On paper, it’s a match made in heaven but it’s a deal that is extremely complicated to make happen, though the legendary Norwegian has certainly left the door open.

According to the club’s official website, Solskjaer said: “I think when you have had kids and players though as coach, you follow them, of course.

“I still keep … Read the rest

Liverpool to face competition for Raphinha signing from Manchester United – report

Manchester United are allegedly preparing to battle out with Liverpool in the summer for the signing of Leeds’ Raphinha, as reported by Tutto Mercato (via the Daily Star).

The high-flying Brazilian has been in excellent form since the turn of the new year, registering six goal contributions in his last nine Premier League games.

Jurgen Klopp is thought to be a strong admirer of the former Rennes man, who only joined Marcelo Bielsa’s side last summer.

Any involvement from the Red Devils, or another top four side, could present a dilemma to the German, however, if the Reds fail to gain top four qualification this season.

How many?!: Top European clubs line up for Manchester United target

Manchester United face a difficult battle for more reasons than one in their bid to sign Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is believed to be on the lookout for a striker after the downfall of Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani’s age being a factor to consider.

The talented Frenchman was United’s top goalscorer last season but hasn’t looked himself whatsoever since the experienced Uruguayan joined.

Cavani has taken over from the striker position and has looked remarkable so far but as good as he has been, he’s not a long-term solution.

That is where Haaland comes in but not only is he surely going to be an expensive buy but the list of clubs keen on signing him will make it remarkably difficult for the Red Devils.

Why Liverpool signing 6’4″ Fiorentina star ticks all the boxes for Jurgen Klopp – opinion

Liverpool are being linked with a move for Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic by the reliable Gazzetta dello Sport (via the Express).

The Italian outlet claim both the Reds and Manchester United have touched base with the agent of the Serbia international over a potential summer transfer.

Milenkovic, said to be valued at around £25million, will see his current contract run out in the summer of 2022 and is ‘destined’ to move to the Premier League when he leaves Fiorentina, according to the same report.

Even though Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies were signed by Jurgen Klopp just last month, Liverpool looking to the market for another defender makes sense.

First and foremost, Kabak was signed on a short-term loan deal from Schalke and the Reds are not obliged to make the move permanent if they don’t see fit, while Davies is yet to make his debut despite … Read the rest

Remarkable: Man United the only team to have this stunning statistic

Manchester United have had their fair share of issues this season but it seems creativity is not one of them, at least according to the statistics.

Given how some of the team’s attackers haven’t been in the best vein of form just yet, it’s a huge positive lots of chances are still being created.

United’s defensive woes has been an obvious pattern this season and it’s clear that is the main area in need of attention.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to shore up his defence if he hopes to mount a title challenge and it should be an easier task when he knows his attack is sorted.

The Red Devils recently overcame Newcastle 3-1 and while it wasn’t a vintage performance, he’ll be glad chances were converted nonetheless.

Liverpool handed boost in Mbappe pursuit as striker makes demand known – report

Liverpool have seemingly been handed a significant boost in their rumoured pursuit of PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe.

The Reds’ apparent interest in the World Cup winner has been widely reported, but the same could be said of a potential contract extension for the striker.

Mbappe has told PSG he will only sign a new deal if a clause is inserted to allow him to leave for ‘certain clubs’, as reported by Foot Mercato (via CaughtOffside).

Two clubs immediately stand out: Liverpool and, admittedly, Real Madrid – but there are thought to be two others.

The European giants reportedly locked horns when interest was expressed in Mbappe from both sides ‘from the very beginning‘ of the saga.

'Probably not, no': Solskjaer rules out Europa starting berth for exciting duo

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already given an indication of his team selection for the side’s next match, which is against Real Sociedad on Thursday.

With United leading 4-0 after the first leg, the boss must be tempted to field a weakened team, especially with a crucial Premier League fixture against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge coming just three days later.

But speaking after the Newcastle game, Solskjaer ruled out the possibility of starting the game with Academy whizz-kids Amad Diallo (18) and Shola Shoretire (17).

‘Probably not Shola and Amad, no. I’m not sure if that would be fair on them [to be picked in the starting line-up]. They’ll be in the squad.’ the manager said.

‘Donny, Edinson, Scott, I don’t know. Maybe they’ll be available, I’m not sure. I hope.’

It will come as a disappointment to Shoretire and Amad, both of whom made their debuts for … Read the rest

Michael Owen gives his verdict on contentious penalty call v Everton

Michael Owen declared that he felt Chris Kavanagh’s decision to award a penalty in the dying embers of the Merseyside derby was the correct one, as reported by the Daily Star.

The official had been called to the VAR screen to check the replay of the initial foul, after Dominic Calvert-Lewin tripped over Trent Alexander-Arnold in the box.

“I thought it was a penalty as well,” the ex-Red told Premier League Productions. “I think you can see there Trent Alexander-Arnold hooks his leg up, he lifts it up and he almost hooks him down, and I thought it was a penalty as well.”

Kavanagh upheld his earlier penalty call, allowing Gylfi Sigurdsson to kill off the tie from the spot.

Considering that the Liverpool fullback had already taken to the turf, with momentum carrying him toward the path of the Everton forward, we’d have to seriously question Owen’s opinion … Read the rest
