The 29-year-old has been ever-present in the Reds’ pre-season, impressing alongside summer signing Ibrahima Konate ahead of the start of the season proper.

With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez yet to feature in a fixture since being ruled out with long-term injuries last term – though the former could be in line for some minutes against Hertha Berlin – it’s possible that Matip could be set to start in the club’s opening league tie.

‘You can never say…’ – Reported Liverpool target responds to Anfield links

Christoph Baumgartner has responded to reports linking him with a switch to either Liverpool or Manchester United, appearing to confirm his contentment with remaining at Hoffenheim.

The 21-year-old was briefly rumoured to be a target for the Reds’ recruitment team, with the club said to be searching for a potential replacement for former No.5 Gini Wijnaldum.

“It is, of course, better if there are positive rumours instead of negative ones,” the Austria international was quoted as saying by Sport 1 (via Sport Witness).

“But I feel very comfortable here and can develop well here. In football, you can never say 1000 per cent of what happens within a few months – but I am very happy here and see a great opportunity here to develop myself and the team.

“Last year, I slipped into a role that I really like and that I can use to develop personally.

‘You worry for Liverpool’ – PL rivals are highlighting major concern for Reds, says ex-England No.1

Paul Robinson has noted that the potential spending power of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea highlights the lack of financial flexibility on Liverpool’s part.

Player exits have dominated the Reds’ window thus far, with it being accepted that sales will play a critical role in freeing up the funds necessary to bring in further new signings beyond Ibrahima Konate.

“It is a really big window for them. There is talk about Salah and Henderson leaving,” the former England shotstopper told Football Insider.

“Yes, they have recouped close to £30million but we know they did not have a huge transfer budget before that. So they could probably only add one quality player with that money.

“When you look at what Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea are planning to spend in this window, you worry for Liverpool. You question their financial power.”

It’s a reality that has left some wondering … Read the rest

Fabinho references 2018/19 Champions League moment that once infuriated him during Instagram Q&A – ‘Just ball ref’

When questioned about his favourite tackle on an Instagram Q&A session, Liverpool star Fabinho pointed to one against Luis Suarez in the club’s famous Champions League semi-final overcoming of Barcelona in 2019.

The Brazil international included a picture of his challenge against the former Reds star, during the Catalan giants’ second-leg clash, with the caption of: “Just ball ref”.

The 27-year-old was a vision of fury after the tie’s official handed him a caution in the form of a yellow card for his efforts, despite having apparently won the ball in the process.

Liverpool ace Harry Wilson set to make £12m switch to Fulham – Joyce

Liverpool are set to bank £12m for the sale of Harry Wilson to Fulham, with the Welshman having departed the Reds’ training camp in Austria.

It’s the club’s fifth player sale of the summer window, with the 24-year-old following Marko Grujic, Taiwo Awoniyi, Kamil Grabara and Liam Millar out of the exit door.

It takes the Premier League outfit’s sales total beyond the £30m mark, just over half the £60m target reportedly set by the side.

Sadio Mane reveals why Yaya Toure attended Liverpool training this week

Liverpool superstar Sadio Mane has revealed why former Manchester City and Barcelona midfielder Yaya Toure attended a Reds training session on Thursday.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the Senegalese explained the 38-year-old has been his friend for a number of years and wanted to get some coaching pointers from watching Jurgen Klopp.

I said, ‘Yaya, do you think it is the best idea to come to watch our training?!’ He said, ‘My friend, I’m coming there! Just ask your boss!’,” Mane said.

He is a very, very good guy and I have known him since 2004. He’s a good friend of mine so we always keep in touch.”

‘No way…’ ‘Clear upgrade’ – Some Liverpool fans divided over PL transfer target

A handful of Liverpool fans have provided a mixed reaction to news of the club’s reported interest in West Ham United star Jarrod Bowen.

Reporting for The Athletic, James Pearce revealed that the 24-year-old frontman had been included in the Reds’ transfer shortlist for the summer window, with the side considering potential options to bolster the forward line.

It remains unclear as to how high up the Englishman features on the list, with the Merseysiders’ potential transfer business beyond Ibrahima Konate evidently reliant on further outgoings taking place.

Kyalami memories

Thanks to a chance meeting with Max Mosley on an international flight to the South African GP in 1975, I became the circuit manager some five years later. Kyalami was, without doubt, one of the most popular tracks on the Formula 1 calendar, and I was looking forward to my first GP in the role. It was scheduled for February 7th 1981. Little did I know what was in store!

The build-up to that Nashua sponsored South African Grand Prix was marred by F1 politics, a battle royale between Bernie Ecclestone (FOCA) and Jean-Marie Balestre (FISA). It came as a real blow when we were eventually advised that the FISA Teams, namely Ferrari, Renault, Alfa Romeo, Talbot Ligier, and Osella, were ordered by FISA not to fly to Kyalami.

Planning a Grand Prix is challenging at any time; this thunderbolt heralded a … Read the rest
