Jordi Alba’s revival at Barcelona can be traced down to one transfer; that of Neymar Jr. in 2017. Since the Brazilian left for Paris Saint-Germain, the Spaniard has fulfilled his prophecy of playing essentially as a left-winger for the club, acting as an offensive powerhouse, combining with Lionel Messi to create sensational goals for Barcelona.
In fact, Alba has been averaging two goals per season since the start of the 2017/18 campaign, and has already reached his two goals for this season in 21 appearances. The first of these came as an equaliser against Real Sociedad in December, and the other one against Elche in mid-week.
His goal against Elche has taken him for 12 goals for Barcelona in La Liga, putting him along-side legendary captain Carles Puyol who scored 12 in the Blaugrana in the league himself. Additionally, Alba also reached 21 goals in all competitions for Barça, equalising none other than arguably the greatest full-back of all time Dani Alves.
The Brazilian registered 21 goals for the Garnet and Blue in his eight years with the club. He also shared the pitch with Alba as the first-choice full-backs for Barcelona for four years, playing together on 126 different occasions, including the UEFA Champions League final in 2015.
Alba’s two goals and three assists this season in the league put him higher than forwards Ansu Fati, Fransisco Trincao, Ousmane Dembele, Martin Braithwaite in terms of direct goal contributions for Barça. Overall, he sits 27 behind team-mate Gerard Pique, who has 49 goals for Barcelona, and 69 adrift of Ronald Koeman, who scored an incredible 90 goals for Barcelona.
Alba may still be a suspect in the backline, but his attacking prowess has never been in doubt, and stats such as these only add to his incredible legacy with Barcelona.
