Marseille interested in signing Barcelona midfield outcast – report

Following an indifferent loan spell at Besiktas, Miralem Pjanic is set to return to Barcelona this summer.

However, his spell at Catalunya might have already come to an end, as the midfielder has emerged as one of the players deemed surplus to the requirements for Xavi.

The Barcelona head coach wants to offload the Bosnian international, in order to balance the books and help the club lower the cost of managing the entire workforce. Several fringe players are already on high salaries and Pjanic is believed to be one of them.

Last month, Napoli were one of the clubs interested in the services of Pjanic, with the club president Aurelio De Laurentiis believed to be a huge admirer of the former AS Roma starlet.

However, according to the latest report from Gazzetta Foot (h/t Mundo Deportivo), there is a possibility Pjanic may return to Ligue 1 instead, with Olympique Marseille recently expressing the desire to snap him up in the summer.

Although highly distinguished for his success at AS Roma and Juventus, Miralem Pjanic had initially started his professional career in France. He played for the likes of Metz and Lyon, before eventually moving on to Roma in 2011.

It appears a return to France could now be on the cards for the experienced midfielder, who has fallen out of favour at Barça.

The report suggests Marseille are targeting the Bosnian international as the desired replacement for Boubacar Kamara, who has recently joined Aston Villa on a free transfer.

With over 120 appearances in Ligue 1, Pjanic knows the league well and can offer the experience that could go a long way in helping Marseille launch a bid for the title under Jorge Sampaoli next season.

Barcelona, for their part, should welcome the move as they look to get rid of their fringe players in order to make way for new ones in the coming summer.
