Following the takeover of the club by the Saudi Arabia-backed consortium, Newcastle United are being linked with every possible player left, right and centre as we near the January transfer window.
Considering their poor start to the season, it goes without saying that reinforcements in the upcoming window will be of utmost necessity. And, it seems like the Tynesiders are looking at Barcelona to help them reinforce their roster.
Reports of interest in Philippe Coutinho have been doing rounds for a while already. Now, as per Catalan publication SPORT, Newcastle United have also set their sights on Barcelona’s French defender Clement Lenglet.
The 26-year-old is in his fourth season with Barcelona, having arrived from fellow La Liga club Sevilla in 2018. While he had been a regular in the side since joining, a poor last season combined with new additions in the summer has meant that Lenglet has rarely been used this term by Ronald Koeman.
Indeed, the French international has played just 95 minutes of football so far in 2021/22, with the likes of Gerard Pique, Ronald Araujo, Eric Garcia and Oscar Mingueza ahead of him in the pecking order.
Lenglet has been linked with an exit during the January transfer window, with Newcastle United now providing him with a potential escape route. The report states that the Tyneside outfit are keen on adding a left-sided central defender to their ranks and see the 26-year-old as an option.
To that end, the Magpies are even said to have asked Barcelona about the 14-time capped France international. Even though he is contracted till 2026, Newcastle believe that signing Lenglet would not require a big investment due to the Catalans’ delicate financial situation.
Considering their deep pockets following the takeover, Newcastle more than have the means to secure Lenglet’s signing. Convincing him to make the jump to St. James’ Park could be a difficult challenge, however.
