Barcelona players Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele, and Clement Lenglet received the call for the French national team for this summer’s EURO 2020, which is kicking off in less than a month.
Griezmann will once again try to lead the French team to another major international trophy after the success of the 2018 World Cup. The attacker has completed a better season than his first at Camp Nou, and will be the primary creator in that attack.
His sacrifice for the team and his stats went on improving. This season, Griezmann has scored 19 goals and has given 12 assists in all competitions, improving his 15 goals and 4 assists from last season, his first in Barcelona.
This will be Dembele’s second call for France since 2018. The 24-year-old winger has completed his best season in Barcelona since his arrival back in August 2017. His stats say so: 11 goals and give assists, plus a greater, all-round impact on Barça’s attack.
Lenglet’s selection, though, seems sketchy given the season he has endured. Constantly at the helm for everything that has gone wrong, there will be several doubts raised over his call-up.
This national team call for the Blaugrana players arrives after a season where neither of the three have their places at the Camp Nou guaranteed for next season. Barcelona’s new president Joan Laporta is currently looking to improve the current financial crisis of the club and the French players might be in danger of being on the market in the next few months.
This French squad list has got some big surprises. The first and most obvious is Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema who, after six years without being selected for a squad, is set to make an appearance with the Blues this summer in the EURO.
EURO 2020 is set to kick off on June 11th, after being forced postponed from last summer due to the pandemic. The tournament will start with a game between Italy and Turkey. For the first time, the competition will be held in different countries, thirteen to be more specific.
We have some exciting weeks of international football ahead of us, with 51 games of the 24 best European nations, fighting for the same goal, lifting that trophy on July 11st in Wembley Stadium, in London.
