Official: Ronald Araujo picks a left-ankle injury

Barcelona can’t seem to have good things for too long this season. Impressive streaks have ended with embarrassing defeats, scoring runs with droughts and stellar individual performances with injuries. The game against Real Betis seemed to have it all, but what Barcelona will be hurt most by is Ronald Araujo’s injury early in the game.

In the 7th minute of the encounter, Araujo blocked off Nabil Fekir on the wing, stealing possession effortlessly. However, in an attempt to play the ball to the frontline, the Uruguayan got his boot stuck in the pitch and twisted it. He was consequently taken off for Frenkie de Jong, but his absence was felt as de Jong was on the end of poor marking that leads to the goal.

Barcelona confirmed through a press release that it was an ankle injury as opposed to the calf discomfort that fans suspected. He will undergo further examination to determine the extent of his injury.

Araujo has been a revelation for Barcelona this season, coming up as a hero in the heart of the defence. Not only has he been one of Barcelona’s best players, but he has also been one of Europe’s strongest defenders.

Sadly, this is the second injury the 21-year-old has picked up this season, with the first one against Juventus early on in the season.

With Gerard Pique still out from injury, and Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti showing underwhelming signs, Ronald Koeman will have to find a way to cope with his best defender in this hectic season.
