Man United star could miss out against Palace after showdown with Solskjaer

Ahead of Manchester United’s opening Premier League game of the 2020/21 season against Crystal Palace, one star could be set to miss out.

After trying to sneak women into his hotel room whilst on duty with the England team, Mason Greenwood was then caught out by a national newspaper who had obtained photos of him apparently inhaling laughing gas.

That was enough to earn him a stern talking to from club manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to The Sun, and it’s left the youngster sweating on the Norwegian’s decision.

The outlet note that Solskjaer has given Greenwood no assurances that his place in the starting XI is safe, and this might be the perfect opportunity for the manager to utilise some of the lessons learned under Sir Alex Ferguson.

By leaving the player out for a game or two, it sends precisely the right message to him and the … Read the rest

La Masía winger Konrad de la Fuente has been impressing as a substitute in the Barcelona first team preseason, but could this earn him a chance under Ronald Koeman?

Romain Grosjean: “I’m very happy that we didn’t give up. Nobody can take that from us”

Romain Grosjean may have finished twelfth and last in Sunday’s Tuscan Grand Prix, but the Haas F1 Team racer was happy with the performance, particularly after where he was on the first lap at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello.

Grosjean was on the outside heading into turn two when he was hit by Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda’s Pierre Gasly, who had also been hit on his inside by Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN’s Kimi Räikkönen.  Grosjean had nowhere to go but through the gravel trap and then into the barriers.

He was able to escape the gravel trap (after restarting his engine!) and re-join the field, but the damage caused by the incident left him unable to fight with those ahead of him, and he duly finished at the back of the field.  But he was happy they were able to see the chequered flag, particularly … Read the rest

Mattia Binotto wants to duplicate lessons learned during Ferrari golden era

Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto has admitted that he wants to “duplicate” the lessons he learned during Ferrari’s golden era to try and transform the team’s fading fortunes.

From 1999-2004, Ferrari were dominant in F1 as they captured six constructors’ World Championship titles and the drivers’ crown on five occasions via Michael Schumacher.

At the time, Mattia Binotto, who had joined the Scuderia as a Test Engine Engineer in 1995, was working his way up through the ranks at a team spearheaded by Jean Todt, Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne.

These days, he is the team principal during a 2020 season which is proving to be an annus horribilis. Ferrari are sixth in the constructors’ standings, already a huge 259 points behind Mercedes whom they would have hoped to challenge.

With the Italian giants having created a Performance Department in the quest to get themselves back on track, Binotto … Read the rest

Official: Aubameyang signs a new deal – and it’s great news

Football’s worst kept secret is out. It had been teased for some time, but yesterday Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang officially signed his new Arsenal contract. It’s a three year deal, and while the financial aspect of it isn’t unimportant, it’s far from the main thing this morning, so I’d rather focus on what it means for the club and for the player.

We’re keeping someone who is absolutely essential for us right now, and who hopefully will continue to be so throughout the coming seasons. We all know how important he is because of how many goals he scores. There are very few world class strikers who can do what he does – score with incredible frequency and regularity while also being played out on the left.

Perhaps there’s now an argument to be made that this is his position, that he has made it work, and his quality offsets the … Read the rest

Melzer and Roger-Vasselin started well, winning 83 per cent of first-serve points (15/18) in the opening set before their opponents charged back into contention.

The Austrian-French duo is seeking its first title this week. Prior to this year, Melzer and Roger-Vasselin had made only two appearances as a team. Their next opponents will be 2017 champion Nicolas Mahut and Benoit Paire. Mahut and Paire battled past third seeds Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo 7-6(6), 2-6, 10-6.

US Open champions Mate Pavic and Bruno Soares extended their winning streak to six matches. The unseeded pairing saved all three break points it faced … Read the rest
