Video: Neymar makes his case to the linesman and insists he was racially abused during brawl vs Marseille

There was absolute chaos at the end of PSG’s derby today where five players were sent off after a giant brawl kicked off.

It began with some pretty poor tackles going in, and it ended with a lot of scuffles, slapping and pathetic kicks – the type that only happen during football “brawls”

Expect to hear a lot more about this in the next few days, but it’s starting to look much more sinister as Neymar tried to plead with the linesman that he only reacted due to racial abuse:

Andrea Pirlo: ‘I need a striker’ – Juve 5-0 Novara

Andrea Pirlo said he was satisfied with the team’s 5-0 victory over Novara but insists the club still needs a striker before the close of the transfer window.

The new coach spoke to Sky Sport Italia after the win and offered his thoughts on the teams performance and what he hopes for the season ahead.

“I am satisfied because it is the first game,” Pirlo told Sky, “We found we only had all our players available on Thursday, so we had only two days to prepare for the game and to try out things, so I am satisfied.

“The guys are committed, they had a good run-out and this was the most important thing.”

The team alternated between a three and four man defence while also alternating in attack, changing the line-up at half-time.

“We are trying different solutions. In the first half we tried with a four-man defence that … Read the rest

What role will Miralem Pjanić play under Ronald Koeman?

Miralem Pjanić joined Barcelona in a swap deal with Juventus for Arthur Melo, but where will he fit in the plans of Ronald Koeman?

Signed by Barcelona ahead of the 2020/21 season with Arthur Melo going in the opposite direction to Juventus, Miralem Pjaić is one of the most established midfielders in the world. Known for his sensational range of passing, Pjanić excels in a deep-laying playmaker role. The 30-year-old makes up for his lack of pace and swiftness with his vision and passing. Having played as a regista, he failed to have a similar impact in that position under Juve’s previous manager Maurizio Sarri.

He is an admirable passer and offensive player but doesn’t contribute as much in defence. Pjanić is often tasked with staying in position rather than pushing into the opposition’s half. This ensures stability and helps in intercepting dangerous balls. With this in mind and … Read the rest

Fulham preview: Goalkeeping clarity, but some thinking to do at centre-half

Ok then, here we go again! A brand new season begins today as we take on Fulham at Craven Cottage. In terms of previewing this one, we’re going in half-blind, because we don’t have any form guide, or wider knowledge of fitness/readiness, so it’ll be very interesting to see what Mikel Arteta does with his team.

One thing we do know is that Bernd Leno will start in goal. At his press conference yesterday, Mikel Arteta played down suggestions that whoever got the nod today was going to be the de facto number one, saying that he would pick whoever was training best – just like in any other position. However, last night it emerged that Martinez would not be part of the squad for today’s game as interest in him from Aston Villa and also Brighton ramps up.

There was also an interesting quote from the manager as he … Read the rest

Thiem struck 74 winners and won more points (171 to 165) than Rafael Nadal in their US Open quarter-final, but it still wasn’t enough for victory. The Spaniard prevailed 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7(4), 7-6(5) in an epic four-hour, 49-minute marathon that finished at 2:04am.

The 11th match in their ATP Head2Head rivalry was their first on a hard court. Thiem made it clear from the first point that he would look to control the rallies, standing well behind the baseline to take massive cuts at topspin-heavy groundstrokes. He became … Read the rest
