Serie A giant willing to 'throw everything' to sign Man United star

Manchester United star Chris Smalling has been handed a new lifeline in his desire to join Roma according to reports.

The England international wanted to remain in Italy after a successful loan spell but ended up returning to Manchester.

United were said to be not impressed with Roma’s offers to sign Smalling and so decided to recall him, though it’s unclear whether that’s to sell him elsewhere or to use him for the next season.

However, it seems the Serie A side have not given up on the experienced defender just yet and that could see a deal happen, particularly under new owners.

The towering centre-back left last season due to the lack of game time that was promised and it doesn’t seem as though his situation at Old Trafford has changed at all.

According to Sport Witness, Il Tempo report that Roma’s new owners believe Smalling is the … Read the rest

Arsenal signing is like Van Dijk with ‘the interceptions, the positioning’ says coach

Arsenal fans have extremely high hopes for William Saliba, the Frenchman who will now be available for selection after a year on loan at St. Etienne.

The teenager is prodigiously talented and cost a fortune 12 months back, and his former youth coach Jean-Luc Vannuchi has gone as far as comparing Saliba to both Raphael Varane and Virgil van Dijk!

“My first impression was that this was the biggest man of his generation,” Vannuchi told The Daily Telegraph. “The difference between him and the other players was massive.

“When he took the ball and ran into midfield, no one could stop him. He was like a monster compared to the others. When he played with St-Etienne it looked normal for him, even though he was so young.”

“A mix of the two styles,” Vannuchi added. “Like Varane because of his speed and power, and with Van Dijk it is Read the rest

‘Life is too short’ – Man City want to turn the page with UEFA

For years to come, the 2019/20 season which has taken over a year to complete, is bound to be talked about and remembered.

From the enforced suspension of all of the leagues because of COVID-19 to having to condense the end of the season into a period of a few weeks with games every few days, it has been totally unique.

One of the major sporting issues involved a potential Champions League ban for Manchester City after UEFA had accused them of Financial Fair Play (FFP) breaches.

An appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport was ultimately successful for the Premier League club, and now chairman, Khaldoon al-Mubarak, wants to draw a line under the matter.

“Life is too short to carry grudges,” he said to Manchester City’s official website and cited by BBC Sport.

“It is one of the most prestigious competitions in the world of sports … Read the rest

Announcement: Making the case for the return of a three-man defence

Juventus are living an unprecedented time as they picked a coach with no previous experience and it feels like half the roster is for sale. Therefore, it’s a moment where there are no wrong ideas regarding what the go-to tactic in the upcoming season should be, and one based on a three-man defence makes a lot of sense.

I am not a massive fan of the more crowded back-line and, with Andrea Barzagli retired and Giorgio Chiellini on his last legs, it is no longer the crutch it used to be in difficult moments. It would have to be rebuilt and the players that are not used to it will have to be indoctrinated accordingly. It would take some time, butexplosive defenders like Matthijs De Ligt and Merih Demiral should have no issue learning it quickly. Leonardo Bonucci is way better in it, as he has to do less man-marking

Manchester City is studying ways to sign Lionel Messi

According to the reliable Moisés Llorens of ESPN, Manchester City have their calculators out to see how much it would take to sign Lionel Messi without breaking the financial fair play rules. Bringing the Argentine to the Premier League is no longer considered ‘impossible’.

Manchester City knows that the operation is very complicated, but they are studying the feasibility to be prepared in the event that he finally decides to leave Barcelona and that the Catalan club agrees to negotiate his departure for a reasonable price.

Messi ends his contract in 2021 and last week he had met Koeman to inform him that he has doubts of continuing at Barcelona after the disappointments in the Champions League against Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Rome.

The 33-year-old demanded changes at the club, and even though Quique Setién got replaced with Ronald Koeman, it seems that bigger changes with a convincing sporting … Read the rest

BMW End Audi’s Record DTM Run

In a race that was all decided by pitstop strategy due to the much warmer track temperatures than yesterday, the BMW drivers Lucas Auer and Timo Glock were the ones who came out on top.

Throughout the race, René Rast & Nico Müller battled each other and were constantly swapping positions with Rast taking the lead in lap two after making full use of DTMs Drag Reduction System. Talking of battles, Glock and Marco Wittmann were another pair of drivers jostling for positions throughout.

Due to there being no tyre warmers allowed in DTM, tyre management and pit strategy is a major part of the races. Rast, Green, Auer and Glock all pitted early for new rubber. Once all of the drivers had made their pitstops the duo of Auer and Glock had moved up to second and third and it did not … Read the rest

“Indianapolis has all the facilities for an F1 circuit” – F1 confirms

This weekend the 104th edition of the Indy 500 will be held in Indianapolis. On the legendary circuit the American Grand Prix was also held by Formula 1 until 2007. However, since 2012 the F1 races at COTA in Austin. Jean Todt, boss of the FIA, is also in Indianapolis this weekend and is impressed by the facilities.

He therefore thinks that the circuit could possibly organize a Grand Prix. “The responsibilities of the calendar are of course those of the commercial rights holders, but it is clear that Indianapolis has all the ingredients for an F1 circuit. It has all the necessary facilities”, explains Todt to Motorsport.com.

Indianapolis good for F1

The Indy 500 is one of the most important sporting events of the year and Jean Todt sees that they have everything in order at the track. “Roger Penske and his group took the lead here and I … Read the rest

Freddie Ljungberg – He’s f**kin’ excellent!

Morning.

Let’s start with the news that broke yesterday, Freddie Ljungberg is leaving the club and his position as an assistant to Mikel Arteta. He says:

“I have decided to leave my first-team assistant coaching role at Arsenal to progress my management experience. I have been involved with this club on and off since 1998 and am grateful for all the opportunities they have given me both as a player and as a coach.

“I wish Mikel and all the team every success for the season ahead. Thanks also to the fans for their constant support and for always being by my side. I hope we will all meet again soon.”

It’s not a huge surprise, as he’s always been clear about his desire to be more than an assistant, and just a few weeks ago he was strongly linked to the then vacant position at AIK. Ultimately, if someone … Read the rest
