Report: Barcelona looking to raise player sales with the departure of club captain
A turbulent end to the 2020/21 season has seen opinions on players and managers switch almost instantaneously. One such opinion is that of Joan Laporta in regards to Sergi Roberto. Subsequent to his election victory in March, the Spaniard was affirmative with his personal objective to ensure that the likes of Roberto should finish their careers on a high, with a golden Champions League medal around their necks.
What he instead saw was the mangled wreck that was the end of the season with the Barça number 20 one of the major culprits. As per a report relayed by Goal, the Spaniard is set to part ways with the Catalan outfit, and they also suggest that his exit fee will reward the club a large sum of money.
The report also goes on to suggest that the money will be invested in Emerson Royal, who spent two years on loan at Real Betis after the Seville outfit and Barcelona purchased the Brazilian on a shared-rights deal. The Brazilian is co-owned by Barcelona and Betis through a deal made with Atletico Minero of Brazil. The contract, signed in the summer of 2019, established that the player would be in Betis until 2021 and that once the season would end, he would make the move to the Catalan capital, provided Barça shell out €9 million to secure full rights
The 22-year-old has had a phenomenal season with Los Verdiblancos, amassing a goal and four assists in 34 appearances, and was arguably one of the best right-backs not only in the league but the world.
Paris Saint Germain, Arsenal among others, are equal interested in acquiring his services, so it is imperative that Roberto departs soon to facilitate this move. Should everything fall in place, Emerson will partner Sergiño Dest as Barcelona’s right-back duo for next season.
