A game between Barcelona and Real Madrid is bound to raise tensions for either fanbase and in the world of football as well. In the last El Clasico, the talking point was the penalty given to Real Madrid after a tug on the shirt from Clement Lenglet, this time, it is one not being given to Barcelona.
In the first half, Lionel Messi was not given a foul outside the box, and the move directly led to a goal from Karim Benzema. Soon after, the identical foul was given to Casemiro, which also led to a goal from Toni Kroos. The standards of refereeing in the La Liga continue to fall season after season.
More than that, though, was the fact that Barcelona called for two penalties — one on Ousmane Dembele, and later in the game, one on Martin Braithwaite. Ronald Koeman did not appreciate it, and was quick to show his frustration after the game.

The Dutchman has never been one to hide his frustration, and post-game, when speaking to the press, lashed out regarding the atrocious VAR system prevalent in Spain: “I’m just asking for the referee to make decisions right. It was a very clear penalty, I do not know why there is VAR in Spain. Everyone thinks it’s criminal. The added time was only 4 minutes.”
He did go on to accept that Barcelona were very poor in the first half while uploading his reasonable request: “If we lost because of the referee? No, I’m not saying that. I also said that the first part the level of the team has not been good, we have left spaces. The penalty: the lineman has not seen from 10 meters away. The VAR is there to help in such situations.”
Gil Manzano had been spotted carrying goodie bags with the Real Madrid logo on them after the game against Villarreal in 2017, which too, was an extremely heated affair. Really makes you think.
