Sources: Barcelona schedule a meeting with Xavi to ‘define conditions’ over coaching role

If things are bad right now for Ronald Koeman, they could very well head in a worse direction. Barcelona had the perfect chance to grab the league title after it slipped from Atletico Madrid’s grasp, but it slipped through, putting Koeman’s Barça tenure in jeopardy.

With the Dutchman’s future in doubt, ARA have reported that Joan Laporta will open talks with Xavi as the new manager for Barcelona next season.

After moving to Al Sadd in 2015, leaving Blaugrana, Xavi enjoyed a lot of success in Qatar, adding four trophies to his incredible collection. He went on to better it after taking over as the head coach of the team, winning six trophies from the helm. While his resume is certainly impressive, there are massive doubts due to his inexperience in Europe, and the leap he will have to take to return to Barcelona.

The benefit of having Xavi, though, is that he knows the club inside out, including the modern style of football instilled by the likes of Luis Enrique. Moreover, he was also part of arguably the greatest side in club football history, winning 27 trophies while learning from none other than Pep Guardiola.

Reportedly, uncertainty regarding the next managerial position at the Catalan club has already reached the dressing room, who await more solid news before the team heads over to play the European Championship and Copa America.

Laporta has held meetings with Mateu Alemany regarding the team’s future, which largely depends on the continuity of Lionel Messi. It does seem likelier that Messi would end up staying if Xavi — his former teammate — came and managed Barcelona.

Given the nature of the job and the position Barcelona were in last year, it can be argued that Koeman has done a more than adequate job. However, it is a demanding place, and losing the league after coming so close could have incredible consequences. The 58-year-old refused to reveal any details about his meeting with Laporta recently, as well.

If rumours are to be believed, Erik ten Hag of Ajax, and Garcia Pimienta of the youth team are also among the candidates among Xavi that could replace Koeman at the sidelines. Only time will tell who will take over the managerial role at the Catalan club.
