After a rather underwhelming season winning just one title, all heads turn towards Joan Laporta for a huge decision — Ronald Koeman’s continuity next season. The Dutchman came into power as Barcelona manager under the administration of Josep Bartomeu, but his future hangs in the balance since the turn of the coin in March.
Laporta has lent his support to Koeman multiple times in the past, in public, no less, saying that he trusts him. However, after Barça colossally crashed their chances of winning the La Liga after coming teasingly close, the president was forced to re-evaluate the situation.
Koeman and Laporta met in the Barcelona offices today to discuss the club’s future from the sidelines moving forward, but if the report from Helena Condis are to believed, the meeting has ended without a definite conclusion.
There are pros and cons to whatever final decision Laporta takes in the near future, but the unavailability of a decent, experienced alternative makes the situation that much tougher. Xavi and Garcia Pimienta have been the names linked strongly with the job, but both lack any experience at the top tier of football. The former coaches the best team in Qatar, while the latter takes charge of Barcelona B in the third division of Spanish football.
Moreover, Koeman did not receive proper backing from the previous board, with only Sergino Dest arriving as a signing he could term his own. The lack of centre-backs, a striker, the injury to Ansu Fati, all coupled with the incredibly robust schedule courtesy of the pandemic, made this one of the toughest jobs in European football.
That said, Laporta could lean into either direction right now. With the signing of several free agents like Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Eric Garcia coming to a close soon, all eyes rest on Barcelona, who have big decisions to make.
