Wijnaldum on moving to Barcelona: “I can’t say anything about that”
Georginio Wjinaldum arrived in the Netherlands today along with Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. Both of the midfielders are an integral part of Frank De Boer’s team that will be playing two friendlies before starting their UEFA EURO 2020 campaign on 13th June.
All the major journalists from Catalonia have reported that Wjinaldum has completed a move to Barcelona after his current contract expires with Liverpool on 30th June. However, in an interview with ESPN, the Dutch midfielder was sarcastically congratulated on his move to Barcelona, to which he replied, “Congratulations on move to Barcelona? Hahaha I don’t know yet. I don’t know”
He took a pause, chuckled, and said, “I can’t say anything about that.”
Wjinaldum has been linked to Barça ever since Ronald Koeman joined the club. The emergence of Ilaix Moriba resulted in all the rumours dying down. That’s why the news of his potential arrival came as a surprise to many. Earlier, it was being reported that the Dutchman’s arrival will be heavily linked to Koeman’s continuity; however, it’s clear that Wjinaldum is a signing of the new board, who will get his medical done with the Netherlands camp.
After a disappointing end to the season, Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, clearly stated that a cycle has ended and changes are needed. Since then, there has been rapid progress on potential arrivals. As many as five signings are on the verge of completion. Eric Garcia and Emerson practically almost confirmed their transfers too.
The club is also working on other reinforcements. Laporta’s board inherited the club in a fragile situation due to Josep Bartomeu’s adventures. As per reports from Catalonia, the board plans to implement yet another pay cut to handle the finances. The Catala lawyer also presented his roadmap for the future in a press conference on Friday.
